A video of what appears to be a violent clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers at their disputed border has emerged online. It offers a rare window into the tensions between the two Asian giants and highlights how disputes at the 2,100-mile long de facto boundary can escalate to deadly confrontations in a matter of minutes.
The video, which CNN cannot independently verify, shows troops from both countries on mountainous terrain — surrounded by green hills that appear untouched by winter — fighting with sticks and fists. The Indian troops, who are positioned on higher ground, can be seen beating the Chinese soldiers, some of whom throw bricks or stones at them. Eventually the barbed wire that separates the two sides collapses and the Indian troops move forward, to cheers from their side.
Clashes at the LAC are not uncommon, but experts say they have escalated since a violent clash between India and Chinese forces in June 2020 that left 20 Indian soldiers dead. With around 50,000 soldiers stationed face-to-face in the region, experts believe that tensions will continue to rise as long as the governments of both countries fail to resolve the issue.
The conflict over the contested territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which stretches to China’s Xinjiang and Tibet autonomous regions, is rooted in colonial-era border agreements that were never mutually recognized by either country. The disagreements have led to ongoing territorial disputes and occasional clashes between the military. In May, India’s national security minister warned that the standoff could escalate to a full-scale war. But Paetongtarn’s call for a peaceful resolution echoes the sentiments of her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and aunt, Yingluck, who were both ousted from office by nationalists who advocated a harder line on border issues.
